Go Bold with a Patterned Table Linen
No matter how big or small your garden is or whatever the British summer sky might be doing that day, bring instant life, joy and sunshine to your space with a colourful or patterned table linen. A patterned backdrop to even the most modest tableware will instantly look beautiful and considered.
Layering – The Rule of 3
After a year in and out of Lockdown, we really feel this Easter is a time to make your table at home feel as special as it can be, and what better way to do this than by creating a beautiful table to enjoy a moment of escapism. We always work with the rule of three when setting our table. Start with a placemat, this is your first layer. Wicker is great for that laid back luxe vibe. Next for your second layer, lay your lunch or dinner plate, a plain white plate is perfect and great to show off the food when it’s served. Definitely invest in a matching dinner and dessert plate. For your third and final layer, go bold. This year we are loving hand-painted floral motifs, lemon patterned plates for that Mediterranean vibe, pale rustic pinks or classic blue and white ikat plates which are always in style. Match your guests personality to the design for a fun talking point and real personal touch. When layering, the aim is that when your guests walk in, they see a beautifully set table. You can then whisk the plates away when you want to serve the food.
Have Fun with Your Glassware:
We love to use interesting and fun glassware. Most people have a set of standard wine glasses at home, so dress them up by using a coloured or detailed water glass alongside them. Go with classic navy wicker for a chic blue and white look or a pale pink bobble glass for something soft and feminine and add wine carafes to the table instead of serving straight from the bottle.
Don’t Forget Your Lighting:
If you’re al fresco this Easter, even though the nights are getting lighter and evenings longer, there still comes a moment in the evening when that lovely low light hits. We love using soft overhead bulbs, to bring a little magic to the space. Dot ground lanterns around the garden for low soft lighting for a chic look in any garden, urban or countryside setting. And on the tables always use low candle holders, candlelight instantly makes the table feel like an ‘occasion’!
It’s all in the Finishing Touches:
Cutlery
The little details and finishing touches make all the difference. Think about the cutlery you’re using – a set of beautiful bamboo cutlery alongside a humble white plate instantly lifts it or fun coloured cutlery is always a winner in the garden.
Napkins & Napkin Holders
Think about your napkins and napkin holders. We love a soft scallop-edged napkin. At Maison Margaux, we also offer a bespoke service where we can embroider your napkins in any design, so you could initial your guest names onto each one or choose a motif personal to you so you can keep it forever.
Vases & Flowers
Use little small vases and fill them with wildflowers from your garden (if you’re lucky to have them!), or buy seasonal flowers from your local florist. Keep the arrangements loose but don’t be afraid to use lots of little vases all the way along the centre of the table. They don’t need to match – you can use little jugs and jars too for an eclectic look but bringing the florals and a bit of the garden onto the table brings everything together so beautifully.
