Fat Loss: Are you making it too complicated?

In the fitness world there is a saying; “you can’t out-train a bad diet”.

Many gym goers know that training will improve your health and wellbeing; however it’s often the nutrition that people find the hardest to control.

The vast majority our clients put losing fat as their main reason for attending the gym, however most of them are often surprised to hear that fat loss is not about macronutrient percentages, fasting, eating “clean foods”.

Losing fat is quite simply about consuming less energy that you use on a daily basis. The body detects an energy “deficit” and fat reserves are called upon to make up the difference!

Seems too simple? Let’s look at some of the popular diets and how they work

Diet Name How it works Results
Low fat Eat carbohydrates & protein. Avoid high fat foods Creates an energy deficit
Low carbohydrates Eat protein & fats. Avoid carbohydrates Creates an energy deficit
Ketogenic Eat mostly fats, some protein and no carbohydrates Creates an energy deficit
Paleo Eat only unprocessed “paleolithic” foods Creates an energy deficit
Fasting Restrict eating for a set number of hours each day Creates an energy deficit

The take home message is that whilst many people often need specific diets and controls to feel motivated, you do not over complicated things!

If you are trying to lose fat …….. burn more energy than you consume on a daily basis.
