Hollywood Childhood. Meet the Author: Alexander Newley
EVENT INFORMATION
We are delighted to welcome Alexander Newley who will be in conversation with Robin Dutt to discuss his autobiography ‘Unaccompanied Minor’ as well as his career as a professional painter, portraitist and teacher.
Born with a famous name to a show business marriage, Alexander Newley is the son of the Hollywood stars Joan Collins and Anthony Newley.
Their life was one of almost unparalleled privilege and glamour but under the glossy veneer there was trouble: infidelity, insecurity and emotional trauma.
This book, written with humour and compassion, tells the story of Alexander’s nomadic childhood; the disintegration of his parents’ marriage; and his battle to make sense of the past. It is also a meditation on art, identity and inheritance, and a portrait of London and Hollywood during the swinging sixties and seventies.
Alexander Newley is a leading contemporary artist, writer and teacher known on both sides of the Atlantic for his iconic portrait paintings of major figures in the Arts including Gore Vidal, Billy Wilder, Christopher Reeve, Oliver Stone and Dame Judi Dench.
His works form part of the permanent collection at both the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC.
