Investigative Journalism: final decline or rebirth?

We welcome James Harkin, Director of the Centre for Investigative Journalism to host and examine this topical subject.

Does the growing power of social media along with powerful “activist” NGO’s eradicate the need for investigative journalism? James Harkin will argue that whilst the profession is transitioning to new economic models, its value as a watchdog for the founding principles of our democracies remains more important than ever.

About the speaker:

James Harkin is a journalist who covers social change and political conflict and whose work appears in Vanity Fair, Harper’s, GQ, The Smithsonian, Prospect and The Guardian. A former director of talks at the Institute for Contemporary Arts (ICA), he once taught politics at Oxford University,

About the Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ): The CIJ is a London-based think-tank and an experimental laboratory set up to train a new generation of reporters in the tools of investigative, in-depth, and long-form journalism. Registered as a charity, it robustly defends investigative journalists and all those who work with them.  http://www.tcij.org/

About the Persuaders: Founded by Alban James and Radiah Ford (née Binns), the Persuaders’ is the Home House debating salon. Swanky and politically incorrect, it offers members and their guests the opportunity to directly engage with thought leaders from politics, the media or the arts, in heated and purposely-chaotic discussions.

Cost: £5 members, £10 guests (all monies to our charity, Save the Children UK)

Time/Location: 7.30pm, Etruscan Room
