EVENT INFORMATION

We are delighted to welcome Catherine McCormack of Art History UK.  An expert in Baroque art, Catherine completed her PhD last year focusing on Rome, relics, Caravaggio and the concept of pilgrimage.

This autumn, the National Gallery will be staging a show devoted to the perpetually enigmatic Caravaggio. Working in Rome, Naples, Sicily and Malta from the closing years of the sixteenth century to his death in 1610, Caravaggio’s legacy has delivered an impact that lasted beyond the generation of artists that followed him and can be witnessed in twentieth century film and contemporary painting.

The talk will firstly look at Caravaggio in focus along with the saints and sinners of the seamy underworld of seventeenth century Rome that he painted, and discuss what this ‘baroque’ style might mean.

Catherine will then look at the influences he had on his contemporaries; for example, Artemesia Gentileschi and Francisco de Ribera, before his fall out of fashion and subsequent rediscovery in the twentieth century. Lastly Catherine will explore the strands of his style through the Italian Neo-Realist cinema movement of the post-war period, up to contemporary work by artists such as Mitch Griffiths.
